Turkey Feathers

I’ve fallen in love with these glass feathers by artist Colin Adrian. They timeless, but I thought a shout out on Thanksgiving very appropriate. To me these stained-glass beauties prove that everything old is new again. I think a need a few of them for my windows.

Valentine in November

Meg, the HAD Studio Manager, was not sure if I would be flattered or scared by the below. Definitely flattered.

WARHOL FLAVOR

Flavor Paper held an event to launch its new collaboration with the Warhol Foundation. I usually find retro licensing like this boring, but Flavor Paper did an amazing job. The one-night-only installation was full on and fabulous. They transformed a raw space with 30’ ceilings. This panorama gives an idea of the scene. The hand-printed […]

“Here Lies Love” is back for one night only!

The best show of 2013 is back in concert form to benefit the Philippine’s. Here Lies Love tells the life of Imelda Marcos. The production at the Public Theater blew me away. This one sounds like it will be a little less involved, but the music, by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim is uplifting and […]

Be Afraid

The Harry Allen Design Halloween party got a little crazy … Special Thanks to Suzanne Tick, who came as Andy Warhol and took all these polaroids. And the best costume winner is … … our little butterfly, Ben. If anyone has any more photos, send them my way, I’ve started an album on Facebook.

Cocktails for a Cause

I donated one of my cocktail tables to the annual Benefit Auction for the Design Trust for Public Space. The Cocktail Table is from a series that focuses on re-use. These pieces re-purpose the vestiges of our lives. I did a whole series with tin cans, and here I am transforming liquor bottles. It’s  easy […]

MAYAN DESIGN WORKSHOP

I will be leading a workshop in Mexico in March. Nice time for an escape to Mexico, right! The program is called the Mayan Design Workshop and it is is run by Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. It takes place in Campeche, Mexico. The program is designed to develop products for the local artisans to make […]

UARK: DAY TWO

I was biding time till my flight home in the evening, and honestly, the jaded NYC designer snob in me did not expect much from Arkansas, but I was pleasantly surprised. First I was assigned two very bright design-student/tour-guides, Sienna Peterson and Jasmine Jetton. We had breakfast at the hotel and they showed me the campus. Here […]

UARK: DAY 1

I spent the last two days in Northwestern Arkansas. I was invited to speak at the University of Arkansas Interior Design Department. They were great hosts. I was asked to critique Kimberley Furlong’s class in the afternoon.  And then I lectured. These are the first arrivals in the amazing new red auditorium. It filled up (thank […]

Spotting: Ferguson Sofa

Our modular Ferguson Sofa, designed in 2001 was recently spotted in the lobby of a Richard Meier building.

Ames Hotel

Designed in 2009. Asked by the Morgans Hotel Group to develop an in-room decorative installation and a promotional mailer for the Ames Hotel in Boston, I wanted to develop a project that would tie together the historical provenance of the Ames building, its sleek new interior, and the city of Boston. I was looking for something […]

Icy Saucer

Designed in 2004 for Steuben as a martini glass, the Icy Saucer is also great for desserts and champagne. Four cut planes intersect the undulating of the blown glass stem and create a distinctive flower petal pattern. Cheers. www.steuben.com

New York Times: Appreciation for a Simple Pickup

Published July 30, 2009. The New York Times featured Harry and his 1964 Willys Jeep pickup in Auto Ego, the weekly automotive section. Click for the article or a special audio slideshow.

Dupont Corian Philadelphia Showroom

Designed in 2009.Dupont asked Harry Allen to design a showroom to showcase Corian, the solid-surfacing material. The designer responded with a series of installations each expressing a unique quality of the material. The showroom “events” include the thermo-formed lighting fixtures that hang in a standard aluminum ceiling grid, an organic conference table, translucent window screens […]

Modern Harry

My first piece of press from 1993, featuring the Living Systems furniture line that I had just shown at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Big thanks to the amazing Mayer Russ and Out Magazine for making this happen. Such a different world. I remember worrying about being labelled ‘a gay designer,’ (honestly!?!) but this is […]
