Harry Allen Design Diary

DUPLEX

I just finished re-reading Duplex. My favorite book of 2013.

I love ambiguity in art; I love a new perspective and being coaxed to emotion in a new way. Contemporary dance, theater, and visual arts can all do it for me, but on the literary front I tend to migrate towards Oprah Book Club feel-good novels. I want to read the difficult stuff, but I get stuck. Books are a huge commitment of time and reading is so close to sleep.

That’s why Kathryn Davis’ latest is so incredible. It’s the kind of book I aspire to read, truly experimental in its subject and form, yet it is so beautiful that it held me rapt. Twice.

Like the best art experiences, I don’t even know how to begin to describe it, but I cannot recommend the experience more highly.
