The Sunflower Vase, originally developed for our Reality line for Areaware, has been reborn as part of our own ceramic production.
Like most Reality products, the sunflower vase has a great, personal story. Harry loves farmers markets, and one of his favorites is on his way home from New York City in Greenwich, Connecticut. It’s called Augustine Farm.
Pre-digital scanning, Harry was casting objects from life to create his reality products, He was very interested in working on a flower vase but it was hard to find a flower large enough to cast. With shrinkage, everything ended up too small. One day at Augustine’s, he noticed some huge sunflowers in front of the store. Mrs. Augustine was very generous and cut a few of them for him.
The next issue was casting such a delicate object. When the plaster hardened, often the flower was just too delicate to stand up to it. After a few experiments, he attempted the largest sunflower. Rather than wait for the plaster set up, he noticed that it went through a phase where it was just partially set, so he grabbed the flower and pulled! The cast was almost perfect.
This vase is beautiful fiulled or unfilled. It is large and graphic, hopeful and wonderous, just like a sunflower.
Vases measure approximately 9” tall x 10” wide x 3.5” deep
