Fat Pipe Lamp

Fat Pipe started as a purely formal solution. The pipe structure lifts the light up off the table and shines it where it needs to go – onto a desktop, or a book.

The lamp was originally envisioned in metal, but when Harry started slip-casting he saw an opportunity to bring the lamp to life in ceramic. It’s at that point that materiality entered the picture. For inspiration all we needed to do was look to the urban landscape around us – there is a fat pipe on every corner in New York City. Most are raw and unconsidered — painted thick and marked in cryptic fashion. Often they are plastered with stickers. That is the finish we aspired to — raw clay, layers of glaze, and cryptic markings.

The identity which features prominently on the back side of the lamp. ‘ FP/ HAD/ 23’ is code for Fat Pipe / Harry Allen Design / 2023. Giving attribution and date in a style fitting of our humble Fat Pipe Lamp.
