Generative Ceramics

When Harry Allen decided to start making products again, clay was the logical medium and slip-casting the best technique to suit his goals. Clay forms are cast in multiples, in plaster molds, and the technique enables Harry to play at the crossroads of art, design, and craft.

Generative Ceramics are all made by hand in the designer’s studio factory. Many of the first projects are ‘Reality’ based, although some more ‘formal’ work is on the horizon.

Depending on the object, Generative Ceramics are made in various size editions. Please refer to individual projects for edition information.

Lead time on orders will vary but in general can be estimated at 8 to 12 weeks.

About Harry Allen

Although trained as an industrial designer, Harry achieved prominence in 1994 for his interior design of the infamous design store, Moss. A multitude of interior and industrial design projects followed, including the re-design of the Supreme stores in 2004 and his line of ‘Reality’ home goods for Areaware.

Harry has flirted with ceramics his entire life. He got his creative start making mud pies in the hills of New Jersey. In his high school ceramics class he became obsessed with throwing pots. He attended Alfred University where all of his friends graduated with BFAs in ceramic art while he graduated with a degree in Political Science. Occasionally his industrial design career involved work in clay, but it wasn’t until 2018, with a desire to gain control of his production means, that he returned to ceramics as a medium.

The Harry Allen Design process is a unique combination of experimentation, cross-pollination between industries, manufacturing expertise and marketplace savvy. Harry’s work is widely collected, in many museum collections, and has garnered much attention.
